Otto ambitiously set out to reimagine home access and create a market-defining smart lock that would address the antiquated deadbolt key system dominating homes today. The result is the Otto Lock, an advanced and secure digital lock that brings together robust encryption and security, a stunning contemporary design, and easy-to-use IoT connected hardware.
With a clear product vision in mind, Otto approached Mindtribe to refine the product and prepare for manufacturing. The aggressive six-month schedule required both Mindtribe’s technical skill and strong project management expertise.
When Otto approached Mindtribe, they had completed beautiful prototypes, but faced myriad optimization and manufacturing-readiness challenges. Battery life needed to be improved, additional security needed to be implemented, and manufacturing tests needed development. Mindtribe immediately embedded themselves into Otto’s internal team to build a deep integration that enabled both teams to resolve technical challenges quickly and incorporate immediate feedback throughout the project.
The lock required unparalleled security and encryption and featured end-to-end 256-bit encryption as well as TLS 1.2 (also with a 256-bit cipher) between both the lock and cloud, as well as the app and cloud. Mindtribe was tasked with executing on an approach to store large amounts of sensitive user data on the device in a way that would defeat even determined physical attackers—delivering on Otto’s mission to create the most advanced lock, ever. Mindtribe also worked with Otto to define the lock’s core features and initiate a development strategy that would deliver the product within their budget and manufacturing timeline. As the lock approached production, Mindtribe oversaw reliability testing and the manufacturing process.
Despite technical challenges and an ambitious development schedule, Mindtribe and Otto collaborated to multiply the product battery life, refine numerous features, and deliver a best-in-class secure digital lock. The lock garnered positive reviews from both early users and major publications.
